Jessica Sutta Interview
Interview with Jessica
Jessica: Are you in Miami right now?
Samara: Yeah I’m in Miami.

Jessica: That’s where I’m from. Yeah, I saw 305 [on phone] and I was like, “yay!”
Samara: Well I’m with Revista Adelante out of California.
Jessica: I think I’ve seen it before. I wanted to take it. You know what? I think one of my friends showed me. One of my boyfriends, yeah!

Samara: Oh cool! So how many of you girls are there?
Jessica: There are six of us.

Samara: Do you mind being compared to the Spice Girls?
Jessica: I love when people say that. Or anything like the Spice Girls because they had such a huge worldwide success. Even to have one tenth of their success would be just an honor and it’s so exciting for us. You know?

Samara: So, are people supposed to pick their favorite doll?
Jessica: (laughs) Well I mean... I think there are so many spices in the girls. We have our red head Carmit we have our Hawaiian girl Nicole we have our blondies. You know? It depends on what you like. But hopefully you’ll like us all as a whole.

Samara: Do you guys still have time to do the PCD Sunset Strip show?
Jessica: No we don’t. That was a lot of fun back then. I just remember those days we would get ready for the shows, that was two years ago my God, and there would be a line all the way out to Sunset because it was on Larabee and then Sunset Blvd. is north of there. And then the hype of the town, The Pussycat Dolls show tonight. It was a pretty prestigious thing to go to.

Samara: What made you guys transition from the PCD show to actually recording a CD?
Jessica: Well we had a show and Gwen Stefani was our star in it. And Gwen started to invite Jimmy Iovine whose from Interscope Records. And he came and he watched and he was like, “what a great concept.” And he decided to sign us into a recording group. And this is what we evolved to.

Samara: So, what’s the deal with the earlier version of the song, Don’t Cha?
Jessica: It just so happened that our label decided that the song would fit us really well. It would be a really good match. So they just put us in the studio and we put our own twist on it. Much love to Tori. She got dropped from the label so the song was there. So the label was like, “this is a perfect match for The Pussycat Dolls.” So here we are now.

Samara: Tell us about working with Busta Rhymes?
Jessica: Busta Rhymes is just an amazing down to earth person. He is a ball of energy. I was a little nervous because when he came on the set I didn’t know what to expect. He just gave me a big hug and said, “hey mama what’s up?” (laughs) He was really cool.

Samara: So, which of the girls was Busta hitting on the most?
Jessica: Honestly he was a gentleman. Seriously. He was really nice to all of us. He really believed on the project so that’s why he decided to do the rap on it.

Samara: How do you guys describe your look?
Jessica: Well, I describe my look more like pin up. Like the old 1940’s model pin up. Melody is the Mexican-black girl. Like gorgeous. Most beautiful skin ever. She’s the baby of the group. She’s considered the sexy baby. Carmit’s the red head. She’s like the foxy doll. She just has a lot of fire. So Carmit is just an amazing dancer. She was the “Livin la Vida Loca” girl with Ricky Martin. So she has that really hot flirt to her. Then there is Ashley who is like sorta the princess of the group. The blondie, very sexy girl. She loves butterflies and fairies. We were written up in a London magazine and they were giving us all names. She was called the Barbie doll. She’s like the Barbie doll. And then there’s Kim who has the more punk vibe to her. She like wears the mohawk and funky hair styles. Like really retro feel to her. And then we have Nicole whose Hawaiian. They call her the queen doll in London. She’s our leader. She has this sexy Filipino-Hawaiian vibe to her. Yeah!

Samara: What does each one of you do to stand out?
Jessica: Honestly just be ourselves. All of us are totally unique and different from each other. Everyone has a certain quality that stands out. It’s just about being yourself.

Samara: By the way you guys are really popular in the drag show world. We perform your song, Don’t Cha.
Jessica: Aaghh! I love it! We heard this is going on especially in New York. There is a drag show and apparently they’re all dressed up as one of us. Is that what you guys do?

Samara: Yeah, we do that. I dress as Nicole.
Jessica: Who’s dressed up as me? (laughs) Oh, my God! I need to see that. Do you guys do it in Miami? Oh my God. When I go to Miami you guys better perform it cause I want to see it! It’s such an honor because that’s when you know you’re becoming successful when the boys decide that they like you. That’s a big audience for us and we respect that. And we love when they respect us.

Samara: I heard about your performance in N.Y. for a gay crowd. Tell us about it?
Jessica: We did a couple of performances. But the first performance we did was for gay pride and it was so awesome. They all showed us so much love. They were really excited for us to come out. So when we got on stage it’s like the boys had their shirts off. And I was like, “heyy!” As soon as we got on stage, I mean, they were just going crazy. Singing along to the song. They were just saying that they loved us. And then as soon as the show ended as soon as our song ended fireworks went off. It was so cool. I felt like we were starting to make it then and there. Because like I said that audience to me... a lot of my friends are gay. Like I like being able to make them happy and make us... not be role models but you know like? I like to be hot with them. You know what I mean?

Samara: So tell us what lyrics you guys sang for your gay crowd?
Jessica: “Don’t cha wish your boyfriend was hot like me?” (laughs) Oh, they loved it. The last chorus we did we did it with the boyfriend. And they were like, “yeahhhh!”

Samara: Are you single?
Jessica: This is what we say, “music is our boyfriend.” (laughs)

Samara: So, spill the beans have any of you had any lez action in your college years?
Jessica: (big laugh) Uhmm... (laughs) It’s funny I’ve never been asked this question before. Well let’s just say... Me personally I have uhmm... (laughs) your making me blush, oh my God! I don’t have a problem with any of that. I think if you love someone it doesn’t matter what gender they are. (laughs) You’re like, “tell me the truth.”

Samara: Will you guys be performing in California or Florida?
Jessica: I don’t know exactly what our schedule is going to be but I’m sure we will. Right now were promoting the single and the album that’s out September 13th. I don’t know. Definitely check out our web site it’s PCDmusic.com. And that has all of our schedules and you know like on TV appearances.

Samara: So are you all Angelinos, from L.A.?
Jessica: Yeah, we live in Los Angeles. Yes we are.

Samara: So is Christina Applegate your boss?
Jessica: No, Christina was never our boss. Our boss is Robin Antin. She thought of the concept several years ago in her garage. Christina Applegate was her roommate at the time. So her and Christina used to work in her garage like about steps.

Samara: What does success mean to you guys?
Jessica: Oh man. Success? Being able to know that people are actually accepting us. Like the first week our album was out it was number five on the billboard charts. And all the hard work that goes into this stuff. Because it’s not as easy as everyone thinks. There’s a lot of traveling and a lot of no sleeping, no eating. It’s very tiresome on your body. But to get that phone call to be told that you’re number five on the billboard charts it’s just such chaos. And also when people sing to your song while you’re on stage that’s another big payoff. That definitely says success to me.

Samara: How did it feel to have had one of the hottest songs of the summer with Don’t Cha?
Jessica: It feels awesome! (laughs) It’s cool. I know it’s crazy right? You know we didn’t know what was going to happen with the song and I love the song. Personally I feel like it’s not really happening, it’s like surreal because it’s like... people are noticing it and people are singing it. It’s just surreal. I feel like I’m in a bubble. But it definitely feels amazing!

Samara: What’s the second single?
Jessica: Well right now it’s a cross between Beep and Stickwitu. But actually you know I think it is Stickwitu because it’s playing in the radio now. Stickwitu is a ballad, one of our ballads. It’s just about, you know, sticking together and how hard it is on the road and... just telling the other person no one is going to love you better and then stickwitu forever. No one is going to take me higher I’m gonna stickwitu. I don’t know have you heard it on the radio?

Samara: To be honest I don’t listen to the radio. I listen to the PCD CD.
Jessica: I love that. What’s your favorite song in the album?

Samara: Actually I love the remake of “Tainted Love” and I’m going to perform it.
Jessica: You have toooo. When we go to MIami you have to invite us to one of your shows. Where do you perform?

Samara: Different places right now. We’re working at Trixies in Hollywood, Twist in South Beach, and then the Palace. I’ll give you my e-mail address girl. What do you guys have planned to not become one hit wonders?
Jessica: Well, the album will speak for itself. I mean the album is amazing. We had amazing producers working on it. Honestly, the album will... I think everyone will like some parts of the album no matter how old you are or who you are. You know? I think it hits every demographic. Like my mom is even jamming to it. Like she loves Beep. Beep was actually supposed to be our second single. She loves it. She has it playing in the back.

Samara: I think that’s it. Anything else you wanna add?
Jessica: The album is out and the PCD web site. That’s all.

Samara: Any special message to your lesbian fans that fantasize about the PCD?
Jessica: (laughs) “Don’t Cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?” (big laugh)

Samara: OK, then we’ll end it on that note.
Jessica: All right. Well I’ll definitely e-mail you when I get to Miami cause I’d love to see you guys. And I’ll look at your web site. Nice to meet you Samara. Bye.

"We all have our roles in the Pussycat Dolls," vocalist Jessica Sutta said by phone while nursing a cold in Palm Springs, Calif. "There's no complaints. We just have our fun with it."

"There is no jealousy," Sutta said. "Nicole has a great voice, and she has a great way of taking control of things. We're happy to have her as our leader. We each sing and dance while she does her thing in the spotlight. The Pussycat Dolls aren't about ego. We're about putting together the best entertainment possible."

It's a good thing that Sutta and her sexy bandmates, Melody Thornton, Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts and Kimberly Wyatt, aren't screaming to be noticed. They're not just competing with Scherzinger at their concerts.

In recent years, such celebrities as Charlize Theron, Pamela Anderson, Brittany Murphy, Paris Hilton and Gwen Stefani have joined the group onstage.
"We love it," Sutta said. "We have no problem sharing the stage. Gwen was absolutely amazing as a Pussycat Doll. She's such a great singer."
Sutta was most impressed, though, with actress Scarlett Johansson as guest Doll. "I think Scarlett is the coolest girl ever," she said. "She has great presence. She just looks like a pinup."

Apparently it takes one to know one. With her porcelain skin and thick black hair, Sutta looks like a contemporary Bettie Page. "That's what I've been told," she said. "I am the group's pinup doll. That's my role."

Sutta is used to being on a team. Before joining the group, she was part of the NBA Miami Heat's dance troupe from 1999 to 2001. "That was excellent training for me," she said. "I was part of an ensemble there, and I'm part of an ensemble here."

Since Sutta joined the Pussycat Dolls four years ago, the act has become big. "I've been fortunate to become part of this when we started moving upward," Sutta said. "We've been doing especially well over the last year."

With the Pussycat Dolls' opening slot on the Black Eyed Peas tour, which stops next Friday at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, they'll be appearing before large groups of potential fans.
"We're excited about how well the songs have done, and we're thrilled that things will get even better because of this tour," Sutta said.

JESSICA SUTTA ON WORKING WITH PAUL VAN DYK:
Pussycat Doll memeber Jessica Sutta has a secret passion for dance music.Making her solo debut as a singer on "White Lies",this is what she has to say about working with Paul Van Dyk...
"Its crazy how the universe works. We were in Germany on tour and we were just talking about dance music and it came up that Paul was doing this album. Before I knew it,I was guest starring on his album. We only had two hours to record the song and he was very professional. He is so sincere and is one of the nicest people I've ever met.You don't expect someone that's so well known to be so humble."
___________________________________________________________________________________________
When she got famous as a Pussycat Doll, her world seemed perfect. But when Jessica Sutta was seventeen, her world collapsed.
* What did you want to become when you were young?
I wanted to be a dancer my whole life. My mom put me on ballet when I was three years old and I loved it. I was fully focused on it: I never had boyfriends, almost never went to birthdayparties, I was always dancing. In my dance class I had a few friends, though. I wasn’t a loner.

* Sounds heavy…
It was even getting bigger was when I got to secondary school. Then again I was even more focused on my dancing. I would be a ballerina and I did everything to become one. Extra classes, special school, different types of dancing… Dancing was my big passion, I was completely merged into it.
* Then you had to train very hard every day…
At 7:30am I got to school, had ‘normal’ classes until about 1pm. On that same school I had ballet lessons from 1:15pm till 4pm. After school I went to a dance community and I danced there until 11pm. I did this routine every day. Weekend’s we were off.

* Well, that’s something!
Well, no, cause my mom built a dance studio in our house , so that I could practise at home by myself. And I joined dancing contests. During one of them I injured my knee. I was seventeen when that happened, and had to take a break. I got therapy en there was a surgery planned, but I was getting started already with dancing, cause I’m kind of stubborn.
* Uh-oh…
So I went on like nothing happened on another contest, I jumped up, came unsuitable down on my other knee, it fractured. Then they were both injured, so I had to find something else do to with my future.

* Did you know it was wrong when you came down?
Yes, immediately. I thought: this was it, and I was kind of crawling off the stage. I was terrified and scared as hell. I thought: what if I have to make money with dancing? If that was true I would’ve had a big problem.

* But then your planned future also vanish into thin air?
Exactly, because this was the only thing I was good at. This was my passion. School was okay, but I had no plans for studying. I would move to New York and become a ballerina!

* What did you all gave up for dancing?
I didn't have a social life that period. Or a normal school life. I didn’t do sports, because it was to risky for injuries. My high school was some kind of Fame-school for Executive Art. I was already very mature when I was fourteen, because I was already busy with my profession.

* Could you eat normal?
Always ate normal, yes. I’ve never starve myself or something like that. I was always very hungry.

* Okay, so you were seventeen with two broken knees. Then what happened?
My mom got me trough it. I got a surgery on my knees and I had to train after that to make them stronger. I chose for another course: acting. And I took sing- and voice lessons, because I’ve learned not to bid on one horse - when something happens, your whole life will collapse. Luckily I was getting to acting more and more.

* You kept dancing?
One year after the surgery I started with ballet again. But not very intense ofcourse. After some time I could finally forget about the injuries, and then I could go on with the next thing.
